Where your organisation allows it, it can add new records too.\n\n## Sign-in required\n\nEvery request needs you to sign in to Tax App. Your AI app opens the Tax App sign-in page when you connect; there is no key or password to copy into it.\n\n## What you can ask\n\n- \"What is my estimated tax for this year?\"\n- \"Which expenses did I record for the rental in March?\"\n- \"Which bank transactions still need sorting?\"\n- \"Add a $120 plumber bill for 12 Smith Street.\"\n- \"Add Jane Brown as a tenant at 12 Smith Street from 1 May at $650 a week.\"\n\nThe figures come straight from your records. The answer is written by the AI, so check anything that matters in the app.\n\n## Before you connect\n\n1. You need a Tax App account. [Sign up free](https://app.taxapp.nz/signup).\n2. An owner of your organisation turns AI connectors on in **Settings > AI connectors**, or while connecting, and chooses **Read only** or **Read and add records**.\n3. Add the server in your AI app and sign in to Tax App when asked. [Steps for each AI app](https://taxapp.nz/guides/ai-assistants/).\n\n## What it can do\n\n| Area | Read | Add |\n|------|------|-----|\n| Tax year | overview, tax summary, profit and loss | |\n| Income | history, list, one record | commission, rent or tenant reimbursement |\n| Expenses | list, one record, expense accounts | expense |\n| Contacts | list | contact |\n| Rental properties | list with tenancies, rental report | property, tenancy |\n| Choices | income, expense and contact types, in your own words | |\n| Bank | bank inbox, reconciliation status | |\n\nAdding is off unless an owner chooses **Read and add records**. When a detail is unclear, such as which contact, property or expense account you mean, the AI app shows you the closest matches and asks. Records it adds are ordinary records you can review, change or delete in the app.\n\n## What it cannot do\n\n- Delete or change any record, including one it added\n- Reconcile bank statements or change a match\n- Change settings or members\n- See anything your own role cannot, or an organisation you did not tick\n- File a return with Inland Revenue\n\n## Keeping it safe\n\n- It signs in as you and never sees your password.\n- Owners see every AI connector under **Settings > AI connectors** and can remove any of them; switching AI connectors off ends them all.\n- Changing your password ends every AI connector you made.\n- What you share goes to the company behind your AI app, under its own terms, and may be kept outside New Zealand. Your records in Tax App stay where they are.\n- Tax, ACC and KiwiSaver figures are indicative workings from IRD rates, not an IRD assessment.\n\n## For app developers\n\n- Authentication: OAuth 2.1 with PKCE (S256). A request without a valid sign-in gets HTTP 401 with a `WWW-Authenticate` challenge.\n- Authorization server: `https://api.taxapp.nz` (dynamic client registration and client ID metadata documents)\n- Protected resource metadata: `https://mcp.taxapp.nz/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource/mcp`\n- Scope: `taxapp`.
